Understanding Knee Arthritis Treatment Options
Knee arthritis affects millions of people worldwide, leading to pain, stiffness, and a decrease in the overall quality of life. Non-surgical treatment includes activity modification, physiotherapy, pain killers and weight loss. Surgical treatment can involve joint-preserving operations such as osteotomy, or joint-replacement.
Injections have been used for many years to provide temporary pain relief in patients who are not getting sufficient relief from non-surgical treatments, but do not wish to go down the surgical route currently.
There are a number of injectable treatments available, although there is little evidence to support the use of many. Products like Hyaluronic Acid (HA) or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) have not been proven to be beneficial, and current UK guidance recommends caution in their use.
Steroid injections can provide temporary pain relief, but typically the benefit lasts just a few weeks, and the benefit seems to decrease with repeated injections.
No injection is entirely risk-free, and although thankfully incredibly rare, complications such as infection inside the joint (septic arthritis) can cause permanent damage.
What is Arthrosamid?
Arthrosamid is designed to provide long-lasting relief for knee arthritis. This injectable gel contains a unique, biocompatible substance that acts as a joint lubricant, restoring the natural cushioning and reducing friction within the knee joint. It has been proven to be safe, and has been injected into humans since the year 2000. It was licenced for use in knee arthritis in 2021.
How Arthrosamid Works:
Viscosupplementation: Arthrosamid works through a process known as viscosupplementation, where the gel is injected directly into the knee joint. This helps restore the joint’s lubricating properties, reducing pain and improving mobility. Unlike other injectables, Arthrosamid is not absorbed by the body, so has a long-lasting effect.
Reduced inflammation: The gel incorporates into the lining of the knee joint, and reduces the inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.
Sustained benefit: Unlike other injectables, Arthrosamid is not absorbed by the body, so has a long-lasting effect. Current evidence shows a sustained benefit up to 3 years after injection.
Benefits of Arthrosamid Injections:
Pain Relief: Arthrosamid has demonstrated significant success in relieving pain associated with knee arthritis, allowing patients to resume their daily activities with greater ease.
Improved Mobility: By restoring joint lubrication and supporting cartilage health, Arthrosamid enhances overall joint function, leading to improved mobility and flexibility.
Non-Surgical Alternative: For individuals seeking non-surgical alternatives to manage knee arthritis, Arthrosamid offers a promising solution with proven results.
Is Arthrosamid Right for You?
If you are experiencing the challenges of knee arthritis and are exploring non-surgical options, Arthrosamid may be a suitable choice. However, individual cases vary, and it’s essential to consult with a qualified orthopaedic knee surgeon to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific needs.
